Snohomish County Youth Step Up
for Puppy Mill Victims

Police and animal authorities seized 155 dogs from a filthy, over-crowded suspected puppy mill in Snohomish County in January 2009. Many of the dogs suffered from serious physical problems and some did not survive after being rescued, according to Vicki Lubrin, a parent of a 4-H youth and the manager of Snohomish County Licensing and Animal Control Services.

After they were rescued and received necessary veterinary services, the dogs were held at the Everett Animal Shelter until foster families were found. The shelter received more than 450 applications for the 68 dogs available for adoption.

Lubrin’s daughter, who is enrolled in a 4-H cavie project, was involved from the beginning. She and her mom decided to ask her club, Esprit de Corps, if they would help on the day of the big adoption. As a result of the Lubrins and the Snohomish County 4-H several different clubs provided the needed assistance for the day. They worked from 10 am until 4 pm at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds setting up exercise pens, hosting the adoptive families, directing traffic, organizing and handing out donated items, and then cleaning up the shavings and taking down the pens. Lubrin reported that out of the 68 dogs, 59 were adopted. “It would not have been as successful without the efforts of the 4-H youth,” she concluded.
