The
Thurston County 4-H Know Your Government program received a $300
award from the local Blacks in Government chapter to defray registration
costs for teens attending the 2007 Know Your Government (KYG) Conference.
Sarah Wilson,
president of the Olympia Blacks in Government, said their group
wanted to support an organization that positively supports youth
development in the community. “The KYG Conference provides
hands-on learning and also develops strong leadership skills,”
said Wilson, whose daughter Victoria attended her first KYG event
two years ago.
Thurston County
Know Your Government Coordinator Paul Pickett said the conference
engages youth to be more aware of and involved in the political
process. “The experience helps educate a new generation of
voters about how to be active participants in democracy,”
he said. The conference, held in Olympia February 16–19, attracted
nearly 300 high school students from across the state.
