National Dairy Quiz Bowl
There are three recipe ingredients that will make any creation a work of art:
- Desire “To Make the Best Better”;
- Passion, “I Pledge my Head…Heart…Hands…Health…”; and
- Persistence, “Learning to Do…”.
These three are also the ingredients necessary if one wants to represent the State of Washington at the National Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest.
Each person on the state team started many years ago to study everything about the dairy industry – and be able to recall those details in an instant. Each year they had to make their own county team, and then come to the state contest. Some of the questions are simple, like, “Name the milk first fed to newborn calves.” Yet, some of the questions require substantial study in related fields of study, like, “The manure from how many cows is required to produce one kilowatt/hour of electricity?”
They’ve each competed several years at the state contest, only to fall just a little short – until this year when they made that extra push and earned the right to represent Washington State at the national contest in Louisville, Kentucky this November. The team meets throughout the Summer and early Fall to prepare for the contest. Look for tremendous growth in these youth from this experience, as they will share those experiences and wisdom with those looking up to them as role models.
